A Few New Arrivals Into My Possession!

I just received a couple things, one on vinyl, and one was an advance but I think it has been released by now. First I will be uploading the new Aborted album. Aborted are a death metal band from Belgium for those of you who don't know. For me, their albums have been a lot of hit or miss, but I haven't gotten the chance to listen to this one yet, hopefully it's good.

Next, I'll upload one of the newer additions to my vinyl collection, Flight of the Conchords - Flight of the Conchords. Well this isn't really a great album, although the songs were written before the show, without the images they're just not as good. Still thoroughly enjoyable to listen through at least once or twice.

Oh yes, and before I forget I wanted to apologize for the sloppiness of my last post. It seems that cutting and pasting out of Word doesn't work to well, and I ended up writing that whole thing out twice, and it not posting either time, so then I just gave up and did that real quickly. And remember, if you like a post or want to request something similar just leave a comment.

As Promised, I Deliver To Thee, Finntroll!

This is going to be quite the post. Today, I give you every release by the Finnish humppa-influenced folk metal band. They have one demo, two EPs, and four LPs. Although they hail from Finland, most of the lyrics are in Swedish because their original vocalist, Katla, was Fenno-Swedish, a small minority of Swedish speaking Fins. He was forced to leave the band because of a tumor that affected his vocal cords, and the original guitarist, Somnium, died by accident/suicide, depending on who you ask. Katla and Somnium were the only two founding members so the band is now completely without the founders. So, without further ado their first release, the demo Rivfader. Here is a link to their website.

Finntroll – Rivfader

Country: Finland

Genre: Folk Metal

Track List:

1. Haterop - 3:18

2. Rivfader - 4:08

3. Vätteanda - 4:35

4. Den Svarta Älgens Blod - 2:35

5. Midnattens Widunder - 4:39

6. Stigen - 1:39

Total Play Time – 20:54

I suggest not using this as the first Finntroll release to listen to. Although it shows great promise of what Finntroll was to become over the next bunch of years, it seems like exactly what it is, the first attempt that landed on the wrong side of perfection. Most of the songs on this demo were reworked and released on later albums. Nothing amazing but none the less a beautiful sign of things to come. Recorded by only Katla, Somnium, and a drum machine and released in 1998.

Finntroll – Midnattens Widunder (The Monster of Midnight)

Country: Finland

Genre: Folk Metal

Track List:

1. Intro – 1:56

2. Svartberg (Black Mountain) – 4:07

3. Rivfader – 4:09

4. Vätteanda (Goblin Spirit) – 4:36

5. Bastuvisan (Sauna Song) – 1:18

6. Blodnatt (Blood Night) – 5:12

7. Midnattens Widunder (The Monsters of Midnight) – 4:40

8. Segersång (Victory Song) – 1:58

9. Svampfest (Mushroom Feast) – 2:04

Total Play Time – 30:00

The next release is the bands first full-length, Midnattens Widunder. This is a good place to start if listening to Finntroll for the first time. Although it isn’t their greatest work, you won’t notice unless you’ve listened to any of their other stuff. The humppa influence is instantly noticeable as the album has numerous ‘polkaish’ themes in the songs. Extremely enjoyable for me, this is by far my favourite genre of metal though. I find every release by Finntroll to be extremely easy to listen to, and extremely fun. Recorded with a full band this time, the same lineup as they have now but with ‘Somnium’ on lead guitar instead of ‘Routa.’ They release this album in 1999.

Finntroll – Jaktens Tid (Hunting Season)

Country: Finland

Genre: Folk Metal

Track List:

1. Krig (Intro) (War) – 2:09

2. Födosagan (The Tale of Birth) – 5:03

3. Slaget Vid Blodsälv (The Battle of Bloodriver) – 3:17

4. Skogens Hämnd (The Revenge of the Forest) – 4:06

5. Jaktens Tid (The Time of the Hunt) – 3:34

6. Bakom Varje Fura (Behind Every Fir-Tree) – 2:15

7. Kitteldags (Cauldrontime) – 2:05

8. Krigsmjöd (War Mead) – 3:10

9. Vargtimmen (Hour of Wolf) – 3:31

10. Kyrkovisan (Church Song) – 1:22

11. Den Hornkrönte Konungen (The Horn-Crowned King) – 3:45

12. Aldhissla (Aldhissla) – 6:28

13. Tomhet och Tystnad Härska (Emptiness and Silence Reigns) – 4:35

Total Play Time – 45:20

Listening to all these Finntroll albums again, I really wish I knew Swedish. I can only imagine what they are singing about with music like this. Jaktens Tid follows in the same direction that Midnattens Widunder was going, but it is just further along. An instant classic, mixing the dark brooding intensity of black metal with the strangely upbeat and enjoyable humppa styles, Finntroll makes something that is fun without being artistically empty. According to some, although the music on this album sounds so happy and fun, the lyrics are actually full of death, gore, and trolls taking over the world. I think this is a perfect parallel with the band itself, the mixing of two completely different things to make something wonderful. Using the same lineup as used in Midnattens Widunder, they released this in 2001.

Finntroll – Visor Om Slutet (Songs About the End)

Country: Finland

Genre: Folk Metal

Track List:

Suohengen Sija (The Place of the Swamp Spirit) – 2:58

2. Asfågelns Död (The Death of the Carrion Bird) – 3:47

3. Försvinn Du Som Lyser (Begone, You Who Shine) – 2:38

4. Veripuu (Blood Tree) – 1:16

5. Under Varje Rot och Sten (Under Every Root and Stone) – 3:17

6. När Allt Blir Is (When Everything Turns to Ice) – 2:37

7. Den Sista Runans Dans (The Dance of the Last Rune) – 3:44

8. Rov (Prey) – 2:05

9. Madon Laulu (The Worm's Song) – 4:01

10. Svart Djup (Black Depth) – 3:57

11. Avgrunden Öppnas (The Abyss Opens) – 2:20

Total Play Time – 32:41

Next Visor Om Slutet, an unexpected change for Finntroll. Just an EP, Finntroll decides that they want to try something a little different. Atmospheric Troll Folk is about all I can think about calling this album, other than amazing. In this release even though it’s not black metal, they capture everything that I believe black metal is about. It’s not about blood, gore, growls, and hate, as some people seem to think. It’s about remembering, respecting, and embracing the pagan roots of the Nordic countries, somehow capturing the atmosphere and landscapes of the Viking homeworld. This is exactly what Finntroll does with this album, the completely acoustic release captures everything that it’s meant to while still having that ‘Finntrollish’ touch to it. The last release that includes the two founder, both of which this is their last recording, was released in 2003.

Finntroll – Trollhammaren (The Trollhammer)

Country: Finland

Genre: Folk Metal

Track List:

1. Trollhammaren (The Trollhammer) – 3:28

2. Hemkomst (Homecoming) – 3:46

3. Skog (Forest) – 3:24

4. Försvinn Du Som Lyser (Metal Version) (Begone, You Who Shine) – 2:17

5. Hel Vete (Whole Wheat) – 4:15

Total Play Time – 17:10

Trollhammaren is the second EP from Finntroll. Exactly what you would expect from the northern trolls but nothing that seems exceptional. A place holder in between the two full lengths. The songs have the patented Finntroll style of a band that is almost comedic if they weren’t so good. This is not to say that this release isn’t good, it is, just not above the rest of their releases, and being so short, it doesn’t seem to satisfy that Finntroll urge. Released with the current lineup in 2004.

Download: Finntroll – Trollhammaren

Finntroll – Nattfodd (Nightborn)

Country: Finland

Genre: Folk Metal

Track List:

1. Vindfärd / Människopesten (Wind Journey / The Human Plague) – 5:36

2. Eliytres – 3:46

3. Fiskarens Fiende ( Enemy of Fisherman) – 3:47

4. Trollhammaren (The Troll Hammer) – 3:33

5. Nattfödd (Nightborn) – 4:51

6. Ursvamp (Ancient Mushroom) – 2:03

7. Marknadsvisan (The Market Song) – 2:00

8. Det Iskalla Trollblod (The Ice-cold Troll Blood) – 3:54

9. Grottans Barn (Children of the Cave) – 4:37

10. Rök (Smoke) – 2:23

Total Play Time – 36:30

Now this is the album that really showed me how great they were. Nattfodd. Seriously, I would say that this is my favourite release by them. When I listen to it, I can’t help but think that if Trolls had a nightclub, this would be the music playing in the background. I can see big ass trolls dancing around and singing along to these tunes, just like the good old days. All I can think when listening to this album is, oh my god, why does it have to end? The mixing of the two genres is absolutely amazing. Just when you think that it’s going to be a little bit more metal then the other releases, they attack you with a beautiful folk/humppa interlude. Simply amazing stuff recorded with the current lineup, in 2004.

Download: Finntroll – Nattfodd

Finntroll – Ur Jordens Djup (From the Depths of the Earth)

Country: Finland

Genre: Folk Metal

Track List:

1. Gryning (Dawn) – 3:33

2. Sång (Song) – 4:40

3. Korpens Saga (The Raven's Tale) – 3:26

4. Nedgång (Downfall) – 3:44

5. Ur Djupet (Out of the Depths) – 4:59

6. Slagbröder (War-brothers) – 4:31

7. En Mäktig Här (A Mighty Horde) – 4:19

8. Ormhäxan (The Serpent Witch) – 4:39

9. Maktens Spira (The Scepter of Might) – 3:28

10. Under Två Runor (Under Two Runes) – 5:36

11. Kvällning/Trollvisan (Dusk/The Troll Song) – 13:01

Total Play Time – 55:56

I will finish with the latest release, Ur Jordens Djup. Another classic from the Finnish troll band. Definitely not their best release, but nothing short of entertaining. This album is still enjoyable, I find the trick is to not compare it to older Finntroll releases. Hopefully not the beginning of a slippery slide down to mediocrity is all I can say. Although still miles above the rest of the genre, well of any genre close to this, not up to Finntroll’s standards. Maybe I’m being to harsh, maybe it’s just because I’m to used to their old stuff, I’ll let you be the judge. Released by the current lineup in 2007.

Finntroll, Here I Come

Hello all. At the end of August, I am attending Finntroll at the Opera House. I now that it is pretty far away, but I'm getting ready by listening to them and other bands at the concert. Today I will be uploading just two of the three bands that are opening for them. The first band opening is Sylvus. I've only heard of this band once, and that was when they took Eluvetie's spot at Paganfest. I wasn't very impressed by them, and I am not expecting much this time either, but hopefully I will be pleasently suprised. Being as they're from Toronto, I am more then willing to give them another chance. But sorry to everyone, I am not actually in possession of any of there music.

The second band at the concert is Profugus Mortis. They're black/folk metal band from Montreal. After originally being formed in 2001, the band went through numerous lineup changes, each changing their sound, until they ended up with the lineup and sound they have now. I am extremely excited to hear these guys after listening to their album. Although the vocals are an acquired taste, as is usual with black metal, the music should be enjoyable to all ears. Anyway, here is the upload of the only release I have in my possession.

The next band up will be Warbringer. Now I actually am not the biggest fan of this band, but I must continue. I don't believe that I have the authority to really talk about these guys. They're an American thrash metal band, and I'm not a very big fan of thrash metal. I've heard mixed reviews, some say they're the revival of the old thrash style, and some say that they're just a run of the mill thrash band. Anyway, uploads will let you figure it out for yourself.

Have a Second Piece of the Jesusmafia Collection

I’m going to take a hiatus from the discographies for a bit and do a little bit of a variety upload for you guys. I’m sure I’ll upload discographies for these bands at some point so let me know if you want the discography for a certain one of them. I should have most releases. Anyway, I’m going to begin with what I believe is one of the most underrated bands. Some of you might just write them off, but I suggest if you have an open mind to check them out.

If you haven’t already peeked down, the band that I’m talking about is Lynyrd Skynyrd. I’m uploading their second release aptly titled ‘Second Helping.’ This album has one of my all time favourite songs ‘Ballad of Curtis Loew’, another one of my Skynyrd favourites ‘The Needle and the Spoon’, and then the classically overplayed cliché song, ‘Sweet Home Alabama.’ Through and through this album is a under appreciated release, and hopefully due for a second chance.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping (Site)
Country: USA

Genre: Southern Rock

Track List:

1. Sweet Home Alabama 4:47
2. I Need You 6:52
3. Don't Ask Me No Questions 3:24
4. Workin' For MCA 4:49
5. The Ballad of Curtis Loew 4:52
6. Swamp Music 3:34
7. The Needle and the Spoon 3:56
8. Call Me the Breeze 5:08
Total Play Time - 37:22

Download: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping

The next item for upload is for Maylene and the Sons of Disaster. DrainTheSky probably isn’t going to be too happy with me about this, I’m sure that he wanted to upload this, but tough luck. This album has been one that has grown on me throughout it’s tenure in my possession. Giving it a few glancing listens, I found it nothing too special, but once I actually sat down and actually listened to it, I was blown away. From the opening track to the finale, the melding of southern influence with the hardcore music is sensational. Definitely a must have.

Maylene and the Sons of Disaster - S/T (Site)
Country: USA

Genre: Southern Hardcore
Track List:
1. Caution: Dangerous Curves Ahead 3:21
2. The Road Home to Panther Creek 3:19
3. Bang! The Witch is Dead 3:30
4. Tough as John Jacobs 4:01
5. Gusty Like The Wind 3:57
6. The Mind of a Grimes 2:35
7. Lady at the Gate 2:58

I now come to one of my current favourite bands. Hailing from Sweden, Katatonia is one of my favourite bands in the doom/depressive metal category. I might catch some heat for putting them under doom, but so be it. I will definitely be uploading this discography soon, but for now I have decided to upload my favourite album of theirs, ‘Last Fair Deal Gone Down.’ Released in 2001, this release is already five albums into Katatonia’s reign. I think this album marks a change in sounds, and a perfect masterpiece from start to finish. If you haven’t heard of this band before, I would recommend that you listen.

Katatonia - Last Fair Deal Gone Down (Site)
Country: Sweden

Genre: Doom Metal

Track List:

1. Dispossession 5:36
2. Chrome 5:14
3. We Must Bury You
4. Teargas 3:23
5. Transpire 5:53
6. Tonight's Music 4:20
7. Clean Today 4:23
8. The Future of Speech 5:40
9. Passing Bird 3:38
10. Sweet Nurse 3:57
11. Don't Tell A Soul 5:42
Total Play Time - 50:39

Download: Katatonia - Last Fair Deal Gone Down

This album is something that I have only lately been privy to. I’m not sure whether to classify this band as dark ambient or raw black metal. Marblebog’s 2005 full length release ‘Forestheart’ starts off with a atmospheric ambient song as the intro, then comes four tracks of raw black metal, followed finally by another ambient offering. This album is definitely not for the faint of heart as the vocals are not for everyone. But anyone adventurous enough, or anyone who is already a fan of this type of music should definitely listen to this album. And don’t let the ‘raw black metal’ scare you, clean instrumental parts are inserted fairly often to lighten the mood.

Marblebog - Forestheart (Site)
Country: Hungary

Genre: Dark Ambient/Black Metal
Track List:
1. Opening 2:08
2. I Am The Forest Heart 8:15
3. A Tempest Never Calming Down 8:03
4. Flame of Wisdom 6:32
5. Howling of Purity 6:37
6. Closing 13:33
Total Play Time - 45:08

Download: Marblebog - Forestheart

The last album that I’m going to do for you is one of my many guilty pleasures. When I was a few years younger, I am sad to say that I was absolutely obsessed with these guys. I still listen to this album on occasion when I want something that is somewhat easy to listen to and easy to get into. Trivium’s second full length ‘Ascendancy’, if you can block out everything else about this band, is actually fun to listen to. I won’t make the argument that it’s a good album by my standards now, but I still find myself enjoying it from time to time. It could be that it is so engrained in my past and my road to where my musical tastes are now that it just part of me like many other albums I will upload are. I’m not sure, but maybe someone else who hasn’t heard it yet, will enjoy it. So here it is.

So It's a War You Want?!

So you think you're the 'better half' do you now DrainTheSky. Thems fighting words thems are. I believe I might have to throwdown.

Anyway, I've noticed that there has been quite a few downloads of the Red Sparowes album I uploaded on the first post, so I've decided to gather all of my Red Sparowes collection, including 'At the Soundless Dawn', 'Oh Lord, God of Vengeance, Show Yourself!', also the 'Triad - Split' with Battle of Mice and Made out of Babies, the 2005 split EP with Gregor Samsa, and 'The Black Tar Prophecies Vol. I' split with Grails. To save myself from putting it each time, here is a link to their website.

Red Sparowes - At The Soundless Dawn
Country: USA
Genre: Post Rock
Track List:
(1) Alone and Unaware, the Landscape was Transformed in Front of Our Eyes. (2) Buildings Began to Stretch Wide Across the Sky, and the Air Filled With a Reddish Glow. (3) The Soundless Dawn Came Alive as Cities Began to Mark the Horizon. (4) Mechanical Sounds Cascaded Through the City Walls and Everyone Reveled in Their Ignorance. (5) A Brief Moment of Clarity Broke Through the Deafening Hum, But it Was Too Late. (6) Our Happiest Days Slowly Began to Turn to Dust. (7) The Sixth Extinction Crept Up Slowly, Like Sunlight Through the Shutters, As We Looked Back in Regret.
Total Play Time - 55:31

The first full length release by Red Sparowes, and I was immediately hooked. The Japanese release of this album has an eighth track, which was later released on the Gregor Samsa split, so I didn't bother to include it. Through song titles and music samples, Red Sparowes convey the idea of human decay. The band, believed to be heavily influenced by T.S. Eliot, seems to believe that we are experiencing the sixth extinction, which is human extinction. Although not their best release, it is still an amazing post rock masterpiece that shouldn't be passed up, especially not by a fan of the genre.

Download: Red Sparowes - At The Soundless Dawn

Red Sparowes/Gregor Samsa - Untitled Split
Country: USA
Genre: Post Rock
Track List:
1. I Saw The Sky In The North Open To The Ground And Fire Poured Out (Red Sparowes) 7:07
2. Buildings Began To Stretch Wide Across The Sky, And The Air Filled With A Reddish Glow (demo) (Red Sparowes) 6:37
3. Young & Old / Divine Longing (Gregor Samsa) 7:30
4. +Rock Song (Gregor Samsa) 6:27
Total Play Time - 27:38

Released in 2005, not much on this from the Red Sparowes. The first track, as I stated earlier, could be seen as an addition to ATSD, and the other is just a demo recording. But the introduction, at least for me, of Gregor Samsa makes this pretty much worth it, let alone nearing the completion of my collection.

Download: Red Sparowes/Gregor Samsa - Untitled Split

Red Sparowes/Battle of Mice/Made out of Babies - Triad Split
Country: USA
Genre: Post Rock
Track List:
1. Alone And Unaware, The Landscape Was Transformed In Front Of Our Eyes (live at KFJC) (Red Sparowes) 6:20
2. Sleep & Dream (edit) (Battle of Mice) 5:16
3. The Lamb and the Labradour (edit) (Battle of Mice) 5:24
4. Proud to Drown (Made Out of Babies) 5:11
5. Gunt (Made Out of Babies) 5:31
6. Buildings Began to Stretch Wide Across The Sky, and the Air Filled with a Reddish Glow (live at KFJC) (Red Sparowes) 5:46
Total Play Time - 33:28

Again not much new from Red Sparowes just a couple of live tracks. Battle of Mice also just have some edits on here, and Made out of Babies just have two tracks off of Coward. But, if you haven't heard of either of the other two bands, I suggest you check them out, and this is a good way to do it, also, once again, collection completion. I made the genre only post rock because I'm too lazy to do anything different, I might change it later.

Download: Red Sparowes/Battle of Mice/Made out of Babies - Traid Split

Red Sparowes/Grails - The Black Tar Prophecies Vol. I
Country: USA
Genre: Post Rock
Track List:
1. As The Black Wind Withers (Red Sparowes) 14:47
2. Stray Dog (Grails) 6:29
3. Bad Bhang Recipe (Grails) 3:19
4. Black Tar Prophecy (Grails) 8:18

An amazing offering from both of these bands. Grails seems to be an under appreciated group in my opinion, and relatively unknown. But this split is a masterpiece from both sides, the Red Sparowes track isn't exactly what you would expect, it's a bit different from some of their stuff, but still the same idea. The Grails side is just brilliant. Almost has a jazzy feel to it in places, excellent stuff, and I'll have more of their stuff in the future.

Red Sparowes - Oh Lord, God of Vengeance, Show Yourself!
Country: USA
Genre: Post Rock
Track List:
1. The Great Leap Forward Poured Down Upon Us One Day Like a Mighty Storm Suddenly and Furiously Blinding Our Senses 8:34
2. Alone and Unaware, The Landscape Was Transformed in Front of Our Eyes 7:59
3. Like the Howling Glory of the Darkest Winds, This Voice Was Thunderous and the Words Holy, Tangling Their Way Around Our Hearts and Clutching Our Innocent Awe 10:48
4. Buildings Began to Stretch Wide Across the Sky, and the Air Filled With a Reddish Glow 7:17
5. Our Happiest Days Slowly Began to Turn Into Dust 7:20
6. Finally as That Blazing Sun Shone Down Upon Us Did We Know That True Enemy Was The Voice of Blind Idolatry; And Only Then Did We Begin to Think for Ourselves 14:13
7. The Sixth Extinction Crept Up Slowly, Like Sunlight Through the Shutters, as We Looked Back in Regret... 14:38
Total Play Time - 70:49

Now, there is a reason for this not being in paragraph form like the two other LPs, and if you hadn't noticed it's because they're not new tracks. This is a live benefit album that they made so they could replace some equipment that was stolen from their van, hence the album title. If it wasn't for the crowd, I don't think I would have been able to tell that this was a live album.

Hello All, I Am The Better Half

Oh hey there, I am the newest poster here and as Jesusmafia stated earlier, I am here to add a different flavor to the blog. I will be bringing the punk, ska, and post-hardcore to this blog, and Jesusmafia will continue with the metal of all kinds that he has started with. I'm sure we may overlap at some point as I do venture into the metal side of music every once in a while, and the hip hop that will be added will more than likely be almost the same, but we hope to keep it very diverse.

Anyways, on to my first post. I'm going to lay out the basics of what I plan on adding to this blog in this first couple posts to give you an idea of what you can expect. This is basically what I've been listening to a lot lately:

This is the newest album from the anarcho-communist band Leftover Crack. They continue on with the same anti-racist, anti-homophobic, and anti-capitalist stance that has shaped their previous releases. If you have ever listened to LC, you know what to expect from this band and they don't disappoint.

This album is the newest from Fear Before the March of Flames, where they continue on with the progression from the post-hardcore band they were on "Odd how People Shake", and the mathcore band they turned in to on "Art Damage". On this release they move on to more of an experimental side and add many different elements other than the basics that they had before.

This is the newest album by Californian noise-core band the Locust. Like all of the previous releases by this band, you can expect the short, spazzy, stop-and-start rhythm that the Locust are known for. It is the longest album that the Locust have ever put out clocking in at about 23 minutes. This album moves into more of a melodic side of what they do, but it is still very apparent where they started and where they are no doubt going to go.

This is one of my absolute favorite bands to come out of Canada in a long time. They have had much success in and around southwestern Ontario for a few years, but are now starting to expand out into other parts of Canada, as well as the US and Europe. It also has an amazing cameo by George from Alexisonfire on the last song. This is their first album and I will no doubt be uploading their second album "Hail Destroyer" soon.

So thats it for now. My first of many posts to come is complete. I hope you enjoy at elast some of this music as much as I have.

Say Hello To My Little Friend!

As it stands, I'm having trouble keeping a nice rhythm with updates. So I have decided to enlist the help of another of my kind. This individual has almost polar opposite musical tastes as me, so it should make for quite an interesting blog. Whenever he starts posting, you will be seeing some punk, ska, and other similar genres. But, if that doesn't tickle your fancy, I will still be uploading the metal side of the blog, with a little bit of other genres mixed in for good measure. So it's the start of a new era, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Almost A Whole Month!

Well hello again, I'm back and I have a couple knew things for you. Sorry, to anyone who actually cares, for the lack of updates. It's been pretty crazy around here. There was work, then a bandwidth limit issue, and now Euro has started, and on top of it all, my bedroom flooded last night. It was like a god damn monsoon hit yesterday.

Anyone, on to the reason this blog was started. I have decided to upload someone that I've been digging lately, especially after the release of his newest album.

Ihsahn, originally of Emperor, has gone solo and I've simply fallen in love with it. He kind of moves away from the melodic black metal genre that I usually classify Emperor as, but I wouldn't be able to give this any actual definite genre. If I was forced to, I would say, progressive black maybe, somewhat in the same vain as Opeth. But enough of that, on to the uploads.
